Moss on Your Roof: Should You Remove It?

Homeline Roofing 25 October 2026
Moss growth along the ridge and valleys of a slate roof

A light dusting of moss on a north-facing slope is common in central Scotland and rarely a problem on its own. Thick moss buildup is different. Once it forms a mat over a few centimetres thick, it holds rainwater against the roof surface far longer than the covering was designed for, and that trapped moisture is what causes damage over time.

The risk isn’t the moss itself, but what happens underneath it. Slates and tiles can lift slightly as moss roots work into the joints between them. Water held against felt or membrane accelerates its breakdown. Since moss also holds debris and seeds from nearby trees, thick patches tend to get worse year on year if left alone.

Removal needs care, though. A pressure washer on full power can strip the surface off older slates and tiles, or force water up under the coverings rather than off them. We remove moss by hand or with a low-pressure approach, working from a scaffold or roof ladder rather than standing directly on fragile tiles.

Prevention matters more than repeated removal. Trimming back overhanging branches reduces the shade and debris that moss needs to establish. A zinc or copper strip fitted along the ridge releases trace metal ions in rain that discourage regrowth for several years, without any chemical treatment needed.
